in the U.S. Of these 2.9 million referrals, approximately 906,000
children were determined to be the victims of child abuse or neglect.

Ohio had 47,444 substantiated cases of child abuse and neglect. That
same year there were 68 child fatalities due to abuse and neglect.
Ohio’s
rate of child abuse and neglect ranked ninth in the nation at 17.4
victims per 1,000 children above the national average of 12.3.
In 2003,
Ohio CASA/GAL programs had approximately 1,800 volunteers serving over
7,000 children in the court system in need of advocacy.
