Starting A CASA Program

“The strength of the CASA Program in Geauga County is the quality and quantity of information that volunteers gather for court proceedings involving abused and neglected children. As a judge, I cannot make good decisions for children and families without good information. CASA volunteers who spend tremendous amounts of time gathering information have a direct impact on the lives of children.”

Judge Charles C. Henry

Geauga County Probate/Juvenile Court Judge

Every year in Wood County there are hundreds of new abuse, neglect, and dependency cases file.  Fortunately for the children involved in these cases, Wood County has an active and well run Court Appointed Special Advocate Program to assist these vulnerable youth.  I see first hand how our CASA volunteers are able to make a difference in the lives of these children and how our CASAs take their responsibilities seriously.

Our CASA volunteers come from all walks of life.  I am continually impressed by the quality of our volunteers and their true desire to help children.  The fact that they are willing to volunteer their time and energy to help others is inspiring.

I support our CASA program.  It continues to provide a valuable service and truly benefits the entire community.

Very truly yours,
Judge David E. Woessner

Wood County Court of Common Pleas, Juvenile Division

Bowling Green, Ohio

Decades of judicial, administrative and legislative attention have been given to cases of child abuse and neglect and continues to be of principal concern to our nation’s Juvenile Judges.

The number of hearings relating to dependent, abused and neglected children’s cases has expanded dramatically in the Juvenile Courts.  Not only has the number of cases increased, but also have the awesome responsibilities to oversee these cases more rigorously than ever before, as we know they have a profound impact upon our most vulnerable children.

Court appointed special advocates, CASA, are acknowledged by Juvenile Court Judges for providing an invaluable service in meeting the special needs of children under Court jurisdiction.  The Parachute volunteers are able to provide “hands on” assistance in individual cases which helps the whole childcare system function more efficiently and effectively.

As Juvenile Judge, I rely heavily on the trained volunteer advocate to speak on behalf of the child.  CASA represents the child’s wishes and needs, conducts an independent investigation of the facts of the case, and fully participates in all legal hearings involving the child.  In its simplest sense, Parachute (CASA) is an effective tool that is being used on a daily basis in the Court….

Sincerely,

David J. Niehaus, Judge

Butler County Court of Common Pleas
