Topic: Staff evaluations

15 July 2003

This FYI addresses an Ohio minimum Standards issue.

Each person working in a staff position for the CASA/GAL program must have an annual evaluation.  This applies to full-time employees, part-time employees, those employees on contract, and volunteer staff.  The evaluation must be in writing, but may be a self-evaluation completed by the employee and submitted to the supervisor for review and comment.  Programs who do not conduct staff evaluations are out of compliance with minimum Standards.

Optimally, evaluations involve the supervisor and the employee meeting face-to-face to discuss the evaluation.  It makes sense to use this time to jointly identify areas of improvement, goals, and training needs of the employee and for the employee to provide feedback to the supervisor on their working relationship, and to discuss what the employee needs and desires from the supervisor to further attain his or her goals.

Annual staff evaluations are commonly conducted on the employee’s anniversary hire date, though the program may choose to work around a supervisor’s schedule or conduct all employee evaluations at one time.
