Topic: Attorney
General’s settlement dollars
12 April 2001
This is a
follow-up to the conversation from the March Director’s Meeting
regarding programs contacting the Attorney General’s (AG’s) office for
settlement dollars (for program use).
The best
way for programs to inquire about the availability of settlement dollars
is via the AG’s field representatives. Once a relationship is
established with your field rep, he or she will be able to more
effectively lobby the AG’s office on your behalf. According to the AG’s
office, working through a field representative is the preferred and most
effective way to inquire about settlement dollars. A breakdown of all
the field representatives, the area they cover, and contact phone
numbers is enclosed for your reference.
Please
remember that settlement dollars are charitable dollars recovered from
lawsuits, scams, etc., and there is no rhyme or reason as to their
availability. The Attorney General’s office cannot guarantee the
availability of these dollars, though it is often to a program’s
advantage to inquire and put in requests as needed. These dollars
should be considered supplemental—in other words, do not plan on program
necessities being funded by settlement dollars; availability is too
inconsistent.
